For the past 14 years, I have had the opportunity to provide my services as a remedial facilitator, school counsellor, educator and psychologist to various stakeholders in both the private and public education sectors. I have been fortunate during this time to have interacted with learners, parents, educators, principals, support and district staff – in various settings, across a multitude of contexts. And with each interaction, the same theme has continued to emerge: Every Child Can Learn. Despite the pain, difficulty and resistance that so many young people bear at the start of their journey, when provided with the right conditions, they are able to demonstrate the most remarkable resilience, determination and tenacity – and ultimately make the neural connections required for learning and development. And it is this growth, this ultimate bridging of gaps, that drives my passion for the work that I do.

In recent years, my psychotherapeutic focus has shifted primarily to the framework and teachings of educational neuroscience and traumatology. It is through this lens that one reframes the way we look at our children. Instead of asking ‘What is wrong with this child?’ We ask: ‘What happened to this child?’, thereby moving away from labels and diagnoses, and shifting our attention instead to healthy emotional- regulation techniques, coping and problem-solving strategies. This is the foundation of my therapeutic intervention, within which I integrate various psychotherapeutic techniques, such as: Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), Narrative Therapy, Sandtray Therapy, Solution-Focused Therapy, and Brain Working Recursive Therapy (BWRT).
Throughout this process, support is provided ‘wholistically’ i.e. primary caretakers and key role players, such as parents, teachers, and guardians, are guided and supported alongside the child – in order to ensure a secure, regulated and grounded experience for all.
